Because the definition for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is subjective and may be unreliable, the CDC convened a multidisciplinary group to develop a new surveillance definition. The result is a tiered approach that focuses on ventilator-associated events (VAE), including ventilator-associated conditions (VAC), and infection-related ventilator-associated complication (IVAC).
This presentation will:
- Compare ventilator-associated pneumonia and ventilator-associated events.
- Describe the tiered approach used to identify ventilator-associated events.
- Discuss opportunities for respiratory therapists to implement strategies that reduce ventilator-associated events.
